So…take 3?

So, I decided to change hosting and got lost in a technical jungle. I thought I lost all my content and was going to have to start completely over. With everything that was going on in my life at the time, I couldn’t deal with it, so I let it sit…and sit…and sit. Does that sound familiar to anyone else? Over the last few weeks, I have got my ambition back to really commit to my blog and my travels.

I have decided to make this more of a lifestyle and travel blog for seniors. This will allow me to talk about the many interests and avenues of exploration I may wander down as I move into the next part of my life.

I am looking forward to growing and exploring the world around me as I enjoy the warmth of love of family and friends. I’m back, this time to stay!

And….she’s back!

It has been far too long since my last post. Life, since rejoining the workplace has been exhausting and time consuming. Add to that a daughter’s wedding and new grandchildren, I let my plans to grow this blog have to wait a bit longer.

Now, with the wedding over, (It was absolutely beautiful!) its time for me to start seriously getting back to work on my dreams, as well as my next adventures.

As a woman reaching a certain age next month, it has become more and more important that I reach out for my dreams NOW. I’ve watched people I love, leave this earth way too soon and that emphasizes how vital it is to go for what you want while you can still enjoy it.

My goal now is to live a more complete life and create a lifestyle that allows me the freedom to enjoy the things that are important to me. I am setting some goals to attain more time freedom to be able to travel as much as I want or to experience LIVING, not just existing until the next weekend.

I am going to experiment, learn and grow while reaching outside of my comfort zone for my next adventure. I am starting into more freelance writing, coaching and maybe even some workshops over the next year.

Have you made any big changes in your life in the last year? Do you have any travel tips to avoid the single supplement for traveling alone? I would love to hear from you.

Almost 60, heading around 2nd base…..lets go for the home run!

Grandbabies and Life

I haven’t written anything new in quite some time. I got caught up in life as we so often do. After my amazing trip to Alaska with my family including 2 of my grandsons, I have had a busy life. My younger daughter got engaged when we were on a trip to Daytona Beach. I was blessed with two new grandchildren over the last year. A beautiful grandson who is now 1 year old and starting to walk, as well as an adorable and beautiful granddaughter who will be one year old in April. Life is so busy, fun and amazing with the grandchildren.

Life also called for me to start working at a JOB again, with the goal of it being a temporary thing. I am working to make it back to working from home or anywhere I have an internet connection within the next year. I plan on chronicling my path as I go.

Is there something you would like to see me include in my blog? Let me know. Right now I am re-starting from ground zero with 0 subscribers. I will update my progress, wins and losses along the way.

Lets get 2019 off to a new and exciting start!

Where to Next? Is it Too Early to Start Planning My Next Trip?

Well, I have been talking a lot about my upcoming cruise to Alaska, so you may wonder why I am already talking about planning another trip.  For me a lot of the fun of traveling is planning where to go and all the details that go along with it.  I know my cruise with my grandsons will be fun and share many milestones from their first airplane trip, and first time on a ship.  I’m really looking forward to sharing the adventure.

But I am already feeling the need to roam.  Its been a while since I have been on the road.  Being a hot weather person, I know my next destination will be to somewhere warm, but the big questions are when and where.

Should it be a roadtrip, a cruise, or something else?  Maybe a combination of the two.  I have so many things on my bucket list of  places to go, but we also have to think about the time available and budget concerns.

Planning a retreat or vacation has a lot of moving parts.  I have a whole checklist of things to make sure I have covered before I walk out the door towards each adventure.  This may seem like a chore to many, but nothing makes me happier than browsing websites of potential spots to visit and things to do.  It allows the dreamer in me to spread its wings again.

One of the things that I have always wanted to do is visit Hawaii or the South Pacific.  I will do that one of these days.  But for now I think I hear the road calling me.  I have several friends in Florida that I haven’t seen in a while and the warm sun and sand of the ocean is singing its siren song.

For now, I will keep dreaming and exploring websites and travel books to find my next destination.  I may not know where or when I am going but thats part of the fun of all this,  there is always a new destination and dream to follow.  Whats your dream?

Hope to hear more about yours .

What to Pack…or Not?

I was talking to a friend earlier today and mentioned that I was planning what to take on my Alaskan cruise next month.  I’ve never been on a trip to a colder destination and although I have been watching Youtube videos on what to expect, its a totally different thing than packing for a Carribean Island Cruise.

This friend, a male friend laughed and said why plan? Throw everything in one bag , one garment bag and you’re ready for a world cruise.  Now for me, thats totally unrealistic.  And shows the classic difference between the sexes.  Minimal vs taking along the kitchen sink.  Yeah I admit to overpacking quite often, although I have got better over the last few years.  I often have at least 3 bags plus my laptop when roadtripping.  I do try to keep it down when flying.  Struggling with too much luggage at the airport or cruise ports isn’t much fun.

I guess in my case there are two reasons.  The first is I LOVE planning my trips, it adds to the excitement and I look forward to the adventures to come.  By planning what I am going to take, I vicariously enjoy the trip twice.  The second reason is I was a Girl Scout and I took it all very seriously.  Be Prepared is my motto for life and vacation, so I have a tendency to pack for all instances, just in case.  I guess that comes from always traveling on a budget.  I suppose that if money were no object, I could be more relaxed and just buy what i forgot to pack.   I have to admit there are times when that would be FUN.

So, I was wondering about all of you.. do you plan and pack? or do you do the minimal last minute thing?  I’d love to hear what all of you do.  Comment and let me know!

All Aboard the Grand Canyon Railway

Some of you may know that a couple of years ago I had the oportunity to take a cross country road trip from Cincinnati, Ohio to Scottsdale, Arizona.  I was attending a seminar held by Jack Canfield.  Sure I could have taken a flght in just a few hours but since I had the time and had always wanted to see this beautiful country I live in, I opted for a 3 week roadtrip.

As I was planning my route, I decided that no trip out west would be complete without a visit to  The Grand Canyon.  I did some research and found there was a small town about 65 miles from it, where I could take a train ride to a viewing area and back.  Knowing that I had to drive about 2000 miles to get home, I took the oportunity to take a break and ride, while enjoying the splendor of the scenery.

When I got to Wlliams, Arizona, I was delighted to find a town with an Old West Appeal.  The town was small, but so quaint. I stayed the night in a small inn with only 10 rooms.  It had a little table and chair to enjoy your coffee in the morning, or the sunset at night.

When morning came and I arrived at the Wiliams Depot,  we were treated to an Old West Horse Show that even included a shootout with a staged train robbery on the way home.  It was a lot of fun and the tour guide on the train really was informative.  The ride lasts approximately 2-1/2 hours with about 4 hours to tour the museums, and view the amazing scenery there.  You may think that is a long train ride just to get to your destination, but it went by quickly.  We were entertained by a tour guide as well as some other musical entertainment.   I was worried that it might not be enough time actually spent at the Grand Canyon, but there was plenty of time to walk around, take pictures and eat lunch before catching the train back to Williams.

I’ve often seen pictures of the Grand Canyon, but after being there, no picture could do it justice. The colors and landscapes were so spectacular and as the light changed, so did the colors of the canyon. This is one trip I would highly recommend to everyone .

I’ve attached only a few of the pictures from our view, but they do not do it justice.  If you ever have the opportunity to go see this spectacular natural landmark, you have got to do it.

Was I born to travel?

So I have been asked why I decided to start a travel and lifestyle blog.  Its a good question.  As far back as I can remember I have longed for more adventure and seeing the world.  As I got older I get itchy to move or to go on a trip when I am in one place for too long.   I remember loving to read maps and navigate on our family vacations.  It seems like the travel bug bit me very early on.

One of the first things I remember as a child is the day I “ran away from home”.  I was only 5 and packed up my little red suitcase.  I wasn’t running away from home,  I was running toward adventure and was headed to live with my best friend for a while.  We lived in the country, the last house before a field of wild berries and trees. Across the street was my favorite hideaway..the forest where I could pretend to be anything and anywhere.

I waited quietly for my older sister to leave on the bus and then snuck out of the house.  I headed out down the street in the opposite direction.  I was confident I knew how to get where I wanted to go.  The thing I didn’t know, was that the school bus turned around and came back the other way.  There I was still in my pajamas carrying my little red suitcase and trying to hide behind a bush so I don’t get caught.  The bus pulled to a stop and out came my sister and the bus driver.  I was caught.!

I wasn’t allowed to go to school which was the worst punishment I could imagine.  I loved school.  Okay so maybe I was a wierd kid even then.  But trying to explain that i wasn;t running away, I just wanted to try something else fell on deaf ears.  Its funny how you remember events years later and can laugh about it. But it also explains to me why my inner voice is always calling out to me to see what else is out there.  Some people are just born to travel and experience new things.

So back to why I started this blog, hopefully to share my love of all things travel and lifestyle.  I hope you will enjoy my stories and adventures and maybe tell me some of yours.

49 Days and Counting….

Its been a while since my last travel adventure.  In the last year I have added two new grandchildren to the family and I wanted to stick around to welcome them into the world.   This is also my first “official” post on my new travel blog so its an exciting time for me.

My next adventure is an Alaskan Cruise which I will be going on with my daughter and son in law, and my soon to be 6 year old twin grandsons.  We will be joined by a friend as well to help me avoid that dreaded “single supplement” .  I would travel to many more places if those were not the norm.

Anyway, I am so excited because our cruise is coming up before we know it.  I love all the planning and anticipation around going to somewhere new.  I will be updating our cruise here when the time comes.  I have been on several cruises in warm weather, but this trip will be a totally new experience.

Have any of you ever done an Alaskan Cruise?  Any tips or suggestions you would like to share?  I would love to hear what you have to say.. comment below or send me an email : cruisinwithcarla@gmail.com
